π¨ Guide 1 β The First 60 Seconds of a Sighting
What you do in the first minute determines whether you end up with evidence or an anecdote. In order:
- Say the time out loud and start recording β voice recorder or phone video. Narrate continuously: "It's 21:43, I'm facing roughly northwest, object is about 20 degrees above the horizonβ¦"
- Fix the object against a reference β a rooftop, tree line, or power pylon. Angular movement against a fixed foreground is the difference between "it moved impossibly fast" and measurable data.
- Don't zoom. Digital zoom destroys resolution and creates compression artifacts that look like shape-shifting. Record wide, stabilised, with foreground in frame.
- Get a second witness on it β point it out to anyone nearby. Independent simultaneous accounts multiply credibility more than any gadget.
- Note your position β drop a GPS pin. Investigators re-derive everything from where you stood.
π· Guide 2 β Camera Settings That Survive Scrutiny
- Lock focus to manual, set to infinity β autofocus "breathing" on a point light source fabricates pulsing and shape changes.
- Enable timestamps and GPS tagging β un-metadata'd footage is nearly impossible to verify, and our Source Investigator agent flags it accordingly.
- Shoot RAW where possible β compressed JPEG/HEIC artifacts around bright objects are the most common source of false "structure."
- Expose for the object, not the sky β drop exposure 1β2 stops; a blown-out blob carries zero information.
- Record 10 seconds of context before and after: pan slowly to show the full scene, horizon, and any aircraft, stars, or streetlights.
- Never delete the original file β chain of custody starts on your SD card. Copy, don't move; share the unedited original with investigators.
π‘ Guide 3 β EMF & Environmental Surveys Done Right
EMF readings during sightings are only meaningful against a baseline. The protocol:
- Arrive early and sweep the site β record ambient EMF at marked points before dark. Power lines, buried cables, and phones all read hot.
- Log everything with time + location β a reading without both is noise.
- Put phones in airplane mode during measurement passes β a phone checking mail will spike a cheap meter from a metre away.
- Pair readings with weather β temperature, humidity, wind, and recent solar activity (check a space-weather app) all affect both instruments and sky phenomena.
- Re-sweep after any event β deltas against your baseline are the publishable result.
π Guide 4 β Reporting: Where to Send What You Captured
- NUFORC (nuforc.org) β fastest public database; file within 24 hours while details are fresh.
- MUFON (mufon.com) β assigns trained field investigators to substantive cases; expect follow-up questions.
- UK: report to BUFORA (bufora.org.uk) β the MoD no longer accepts public UFO reports.
- France: GEIPAN (cnes-geipan.fr) β the official state office, accepts reports with full case-file publication.
- Pilots/aircrew: ASRS β NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System accepts UAP reports with confidentiality protections.
Include in every report: exact time (state your time zone), GPS position, viewing direction and elevation angle, duration, weather, number of witnesses, your original unedited media, and β critically β what you ruled out and how. Reports that consider prosaic explanations are taken far more seriously, by investigators and by our scoring system alike.
π‘οΈ Guide 5 β Safety & Etiquette
- Never trespass β military test ranges are hotspots because they're defended. Observe from public land; know your local boundaries.
- Tell someone your location and return time β remote skywatching is a wilderness activity first, an investigation second.
- Never point lasers at anything in the sky β aircraft illumination is a serious criminal offence everywhere.
- Respect witnesses β if you interview someone, record only with consent, and don't lead: ask "what did you see?", never "did it move like a craft?"
- Stay sober, dress warm, bring backup power β most field sessions fail for boring reasons.
β The Pre-Departure Checklist
- Batteries charged: camera, recorder, power bank, headlamp
- SD cards empty, with at least one spare
- Timestamps + GPS tagging verified ON (check against an internet clock)
- Manual-focus operation practised in the dark
- Red light only after sunset β white light taped over if needed
- Compass calibrated / bearing app tested
- Sky apps installed: satellite tracker, flight radar, star map β for ruling things out live
- Weather + aurora/space-weather forecast checked
- Site baseline EMF sweep planned (arrive before dark)
- Someone knows where you are and when you'll be back
